6th Annual Haberman Fabrics
Superbowl Sunday
Football Widows Sewing Retreat

- A Benefit for Haven -

January 26, 2003

Over 80 new and experienced sewers "Touched Down" at the new Haberman Fabrics for the 6th Annual Super Bowl Sunday Football Widows Sewing Retreat on Sunday, January 26 from noon to 5 p.m. Over $1300.00 was raised for HAVEN with admission donations. It was a special day for everyone to enjoy their sewing passion together, visiting, sharing with other creative people, learning new sewing techniques at our demos, enjoying light refreshments, problem solving with our experts, working in our classroom on sewing projects brought in, or starting new ones to complete in the evening at home during the football game.

Our GAME PLAN for the day included the all day PROBLEM SOLVING CLINIC, where our talented teacher Lucky Weddigen helped find solutions to questions on projects brought to the CLINIC. Plus there were four great demonstrations on apparel and home décor sewing, and embellishment. Then more fun and games with sewer’s bingo.

HAVEN, beneficiary of this event, is the only organization in Oakland County, which provides treatment, and prevention services focused exclusively on the issues of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Their programs include emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children, residential and non-residential counseling for domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse, advocacy in the courts and a "first response" program on call to hospitals, police departments and other locations, to provide advocacy and support to victims. They also provide counseling and treatment for those who have survived sexual assault both as adults and as children, counseling for adults molested as children, supervised parenting time, and prevention education to school, community groups and systems such as health care, law enforcement and clergy.

HERE’S THE LIST OF PLAY-BY-PLAY DEMONSTRATIONS ENJOYED THIS YEAR:

1 p.m. Winning Point Wrap: Rebecca Moore taught how to make a beautiful kimono, letting special fabrics create the excitement.

2 p.m. Lightning Play: Tamara Ulicny demonstrated how to perk up a dark corner with great, easy-to-make, translucent hanging lampshades.

3 p.m. Pea Pod Huddle: Lucky Weddigen taught a clever, fashionable way to embellish clothing, handbags or other scarves, or pillows with unique beaded pea pods — and strawberries.

4 p.m. Embroidery Goals: Universal Sewing Center’s Barbara Skimin showed how to add tremendous, fashionable appeal to your garment with machine embroidery.
