8th Annual Superbowl Sunday
Football Widows' Sewing Retreat

- A Benefit For Haven -

Attendees at this year's Sewing Retreat

Creativity, camaraderie, and compassion awaited over 100 new and experienced sewers at the 8th Annual Sew-In held on February 6, 2005. About $2300.00 was raised for HAVEN with admission donations for the full day’s events. It was a special day for everyone to enjoy their sewing passion together: visiting, sharing with other creative people, learning new sewing techniques at our demos, enjoying light refreshments, problem solving with our experts, working in our classroom on sewing projects brought in, or starting new ones to complete in the evening at home during the football game.

Our GAME PLAN for the day included the all day PROBLEM SOLVING CLINIC, where talented staff shared their expertise and assisted customers in conquering their sewing challenges and projects. There were four great demonstrations too. These demo lessons included Patty Weir's fashionable, FAUX FUR COLLARS and warm, snuggly FAUX FUR THROWS; Patty also led an excellent group of teens, tweens, and adult beginner sewers in making simple, TRENDY NET SKIRTS with artistic embellishments; Barbara Skimin of Universal Sewing Center lent her expertise in demonstrating how to make BOILED/FELTED WOOL SCARVES. Barbara's eye-catching, embellished wool scarf was then auctioned off with a winning bid of a $125.00 donation to Haven! Finally, Lynn McCabe wrapped things up with EMBELLISHED LAMPSHADES. Students got to transform basic lampshades into beautiful designer accents using beads, braids, fringe and ribbon. A wonderful time of sewing and camaraderie was had by all!

HAVEN, the non-profit beneficiary of this event, is an excellent, Oakland County charity that provides treatment, counseling, shelter, legal advocacy, and pro-active prevention programs focused exclusively on domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.
