~ April 7, 8, & 9 ~

techniques to students

Creativity, fun, and design adventure enriched students during Kayla Kennington's "Modular Design" weekend, Friday, April 7th – Sunday, April 9th. Kayla is an award-winning art-to-wear clothing, costume and pattern designer. This very popular event drew sewing and art-to-wear enthusiasts from all over metro Detroit and around Michigan.

During Friday evening's inspirational design seminar, over 70 students were treated
to an informative lecture, slide show presentation and spectacular garment trunk show. On display were Kayla's award winning showpiece garments, as well as her elegantly refined art-to-wear garments created from her Modular Design Patterns. Some of Kayla's unique construction techniques were also included.

Students attending the 2-day hands on workshop learned how to create Kayla's uniquely styled, layered clothing, including her signature seams, and also how to mix-and-match pattern pieces from many patterns (a sleeve from one pattern and a front panel from another). Kayla's artistic designs are created from simple geometric shaped pattern pieces, with unique, decorative seam connection techniques. The styles have no buttons, zippers, or facings for a great, uncomplicated introduction to garment sewing. Several students even modified pattern pieces to create their own unique designs.

Both Friday and Saturday/Sunday admission fees included special reduced-prices on MODULAR DESIGN patterns. The 2-day workshop also included lunch each day, and a coupon good for Modular Design patterns and materials purchases.
