Alas, poor Madonna. She spent days trying to find real lingerie notions. The search for proper tailoring tools exhausted Claire. And Martha is lost without her silk thread and fine sewing notions. They should know about Haberman Fabrics’ very complete notions department.

Notions

We carry the basic and hard-to-find notions that make sewing faster, easier, more accurate and fun. Thread, from Gütermann or Coats and Clark All Purpose to Gütermann Silk. Basic fasteners to magnetic snaps, and excellent Snapsource® closures. Jean-a-ma-jigs®, invisible zippers, surgical seam rippers, double-eyed needles, disappearing chalk, Schmetz® needles and Swiss pins. The list goes on and on.

Our tailoring essentials give your projects the professional results you seek. There’s a great variety of pressing aids, assorted rulers, shoulder pads, marking and cutting tools, twill and edge tape, wigan (bias cut interfacing for hems), curtained waistbanding, undercollar wool felt, and of course, many styles of our favorite Gingher® shears.

Sewing lingerie demands specific notions. They’re here too. A variety of elastics, from knit to satin bra strap, 1/2 inch to 4-inch wide stretch lace. Accessories like hooks, rings and sliders. Bra cups and extenders. Hold it in with power net. Hold it up with boning in steel, spiral, ridgeline or featherweight nylon. Busks too.

We try to have the latest and the best toys and tools of our trade. Tired of searching? Contact us for your notion needs.

Linings and Interfacings

Lining can improve the way your garment hangs and feels when you wear it, add to its life, and prevent some wrinkling. We carry the full color range of our favorite linings. Unfortunately we can’t show the colors here because there’s just too much variation in computer and monitor color renditions to promise accuracy. So, if you would like us find the best shade for your fabric, just send a swatch to us at the store and specify which lining you prefer:

Ambiance® is our favorite. It’s the soft and silky bemberg rayon, intrinsically static-free, and perfect for garments that drape or flow, or when you simply want the feel of this elegant lining, like for dresses and fine jackets. It’s dry clean recommended, but we’ve been known to hand wash it (or machine gentle) before cutting to allow for any shrinkage and don’t mind the little pressing it requires. It’s 45 inches wide and $7.99 per yard.

Hang Loose®, is the permanently non-static, plain weave, washable polyester lining; great for pants and fairly straight garments. It’s 48 inches wide and $4.69 per yard.

Hang Free® is a fairly new anti-static polyester lining. It’s softer than Hang Loose®, a bit lighter weight than Ambiance® and is 54 inches wide. That makes it just right for bias cut dresses and skirts where you want the extra width. Basic colors only at this time. Priced at $4.59.

Warm Coat Lining is a supple, poly-blend satin that’s flannel-backed for added warmth. It’s 58" wide, $11.50 per yard, and available in Sterling, Oyster, Winter White, Copper, Sable, Sangria, Everglade, Navy, Red Hot, or Black. To view and purchase online, click here.

Acetate basic linings in a limited range are also available.

You may choose to line in China silk, cotton broadcloth or fine cotton batiste. Or select any attractive coordinating solid or printed lightweight silk or polyester, like crepe de chine. Need it sheer? For crispness use silk or polyester organza; for softness use either in chiffon or georgette.

Underlining and Interfacing

For underlining, you can sew in a little body with organza, organdy, or tulle, or a lot of body with crinoline or heavy buckram. There are other sew-in underlinings and interfacings of varying weights and crispness, generally available in white or black, 22 to 45 inches wide. For quality and longevity, we prefer woven materials only to use in apparel, rather than the non-wovens such as Pellon products. Like the major designers, we use fusible lightweight weft or knit as underling for jacket fabrics to add body or support for lightweight or loosely woven fabrics.

Fusible interfacings have improved by leaps and bounds. Again we prefer the woven or knitted varieties and stock the various weights from basic to couture in weft, knit and fusible broadcloth types, from 22 to 60 inches wide.

Hair Canvas interfacing is essential when using classic tailoring techniques. Natural fiber hair canvas presses and shapes beautifully. We stock several weights from soft to firm and different widths, up to 68 inches wide. Try wide, couture quality for economical layouts and excellent results.
